A Gastronomic Destination Like No Other

Geylang has more cheap, excellent food per square kilometre than anywhere else in Singapore. The mistake most guides make is listing categories ("great frog porridge, authentic Malay food") without telling you where. Here are some of our recommendations:

• Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee. 2 Jalan Ayer, just off Lorong 1. Holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, promoted up from Michelin Plate in 2024. Over 70 years old. Open 8am to 3:30pm, closed Tuesdays. This is a breakfast and lunch place, not dinner. Basic prawn mee from $6. The king prawn pork rib version is what most regulars actually order.
• Eminent Frog Porridge. 323 Geylang Road at Lorong 19. Michelin Bib Gourmand. Open 5pm to 4am. Go for the homemade chilli frog, not the plain porridge alone. Queue stretches past 10pm on weekends.
• G7 Live Seafood & Frog Porridge. 161 to 163 Geylang Road at Lorong 3. Open 3pm to 3am. Broader menu than Eminent (full zi char), and two-storey seating means less queueing. Claypot porridge served separately from the wok-fried frog. That's the local convention; don't mix them on the first spoon.
• Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge. 235 Geylang Road, Lorong 9. Founded 1995. The original claypot frog porridge concept. Everyone else borrowed the format. Open until 4am.

Three frog porridge destinations within walking distance of each other, all with Michelin or founder-level standing, all open past midnight. That's what "late-night food scene" actually means. 

Durian stalls also line Geylang Road during season (roughly June to August, briefly again in December). You'll find them by smell before you find them by sign.

Culture, Tradition & Contrast

Within a few minutes' distance is Geylang Serai, which serves as the center of culture for the Malay community in Singapore. The area comes alive with festive lighting and cuisine during the month of Ramadan. Thus, one enjoys firsthand experience of the rich cultural traditions of the country.
